How to prevent posting to closed future periods in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC)

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC) you can close the Fiscal Year, but not each individual Period. How do you prevent users from posting to periods that have been finalized? You can set the Allow Posting From (and Allow Posting To) dates. You can set these values for the company as a whole and/or for each individual user.

Allow Posting From will not allow entries to be posted to any date prior to the date specified. For example, you could update the Allow Posting From date for your Payables and Sales users at the end of the period, but still allow the Accounting/Finance team to post entries until the period is closed. Once the period is closed you can set the date so no-one can enter any transactions.

Allow Posting To will not allow entries to be posted to any date after the date specified. You can set the Allow Posting To date to prevent posting into future periods. This helps keep transactions in the period(s) you are monitoring. It also helps to avoid posting to future dates due to typos in the year.

To Restrict Posting Dates for the Company

  1. Search for General Ledger Setup

  1. Set Allow Posting From to the earliest date to allow Posting (and the To date if desired)

To control posting dates for individual users

  1. Search for user setup
  2. Select User Setup

  1. Update the From (and To) posting dates as desired.
